Family DIY Solar Oven Challenge

Create a solar oven using simple materials to learn about renewable energy. This fun family activity encourages teamwork and scientific exploration while cooking a treat using the power of the sun!

Safety notes

No special safety concerns. Ensure children are supervised when using scissors.

What you will need

  • Cardboard box
  • aluminum foil
  • plastic wrap
  • black paper
  • tape
  • small marshmallows or s'mores ingredients

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Gather Supplies: Collect all the materials listed above before starting.
  2. Prepare the Box: Cut a flap in the top of the cardboard box, leaving one side attached to create a hinge. Use scissors carefully and ask for help if needed.
  3. Line with Foil: Cover the inside of the flap and bottom of the box with aluminum foil to reflect sunlight. Smooth out wrinkles for better reflection.
  4. Add Black Paper: Place black paper at the bottom of the box to absorb heat. This will help cook your treats more effectively.
  5. Seal with Plastic Wrap: Stretch plastic wrap over the opening of the box to create an airtight window. Make sure it is tight to trap heat inside.
  6. Set Up in the Sun: Position the solar oven outside in a sunny spot. Adjust the flap to catch the sunlight for maximum heat exposure.
  7. Cook Your Treat: Place your s'mores ingredients inside the oven and let them cook for 30-60 minutes, checking occasionally to see how they are melting.
  8. Enjoy and Discuss: Enjoy your treats together and talk about how solar energy works, discussing its benefits and applications in daily life.

Parent guide

Encourage your children to take the lead in building the solar oven and making decisions. Discuss the science behind solar energy and how it can be used in everyday life. Ask questions like, 'How does the sun's heat cook our food?' to stimulate curiosity.

Educational benefits

  • Teaches about renewable energy and sustainability
  • Enhances problem-solving skills through hands-on building
  • Promotes teamwork and collaboration in a fun setting
  • Encourages critical thinking about energy use and conservation

Why this works as a screen-time alternative

This engaging activity provides a hands-on learning experience that stimulates creativity and curiosity, keeping children away from screens while exploring science.
