Family Solar Oven Experiment
Learn about solar energy by making a simple solar oven using a pizza box! This fun and educational activity allows families to cook s'mores using the power of the sun.
Safety notes
Ensure adult supervision when using scissors. No other special safety concerns.
What you will need
- Pizza box
- aluminum foil
- plastic wrap
- black construction paper
- scissors
- tape
- small marshmallows
- chocolate
- graham crackers
Step-by-step instructions
- Prepare the Pizza Box: Carefully open the pizza box and set it upright. This will be the base of your solar oven.
- Create a Reflector: Cut a flap in the lid of the pizza box, leaving one side attached. This will act as a reflector to direct sunlight into the box.
- Line with Foil: Cover the inside of the flap with aluminum foil, shiny side up, and tape it down securely to reflect sunlight into the box.
- Add Black Paper: Place a piece of black construction paper at the bottom of the box. The black color helps absorb heat more effectively!
- Seal the Box: Cover the opening of the box with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse effect, sealing it tightly with tape to prevent heat loss.
- Prepare to Cook: Place the s'mores components (marshmallows, chocolate, graham crackers) on the black paper and close the box securely.
- Find a Sunny Spot: Place the solar oven in direct sunlight and adjust the flap to reflect sunlight towards the box for optimal heating.
- Enjoy Your Treats: After about 30-60 minutes, check your s'mores! Once melted, enjoy your delicious solar-cooked treat with your family.
Parent guide
Parents should assist with cutting the pizza box and ensure children handle scissors safely. Encourage kids to observe how the sun's heat affects the s'mores and ask questions about solar energy throughout the experiment.
Educational benefits
- Introduces basic principles of solar energy and its applications
- Enhances problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Encourages teamwork and collaboration among family members
Why this works as a screen-time alternative
This activity engages children in hands-on learning about renewable energy, providing a fun and interactive experience away from screens. It fosters creativity while promoting family bonding.
